Generator Transfer Switch Installation For Lynchburg Area

Safely Connect Your Generator to Your Home's Electrical Panel

Transfer Switch Installation LynchburgIf you’re adding a permanent standby generator or a portable generator to your home, a transfer switch is an important accessory that will ensure your generator provides safe, reliable power when you need it most. A transfer switch allows for the safe switchover of power from the electrical grid to your generator, preventing voltage from inadvertently escaping from the generator back to the power grid, or from the grid to your generator when the generator is providing power.

A transfer switch mechanical interlock device is required by the National Electric Code for any connection of power to a home.  For your safety, the transfer switch should be installed by a licensed electrician. Portable generators that are manually operated will typically employ a manual transfer switch, while permanent standby generators require an automatic transfer switch.

How an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Works

When power from the utility company fails because of a lightning strike, downed power line or other system failure  the transfer switch detects the loss of voltage and immediately shifts the electrical load to the emergency power source. This occurs when power from the generator is stable and within prescribed voltage tolerances.

When power from the utility company is restored, the transfer switch re-transfers the load from the back-up power source to the utility company power source.

Transfer Switch Options

Depending on your home’s power needs, a transfer switch can provide anywhere between 50-400 amps. Before installation, determine whether you want to power all the circuits in your electrical panel, or just your essential appliances, such as the refrigerator, air conditioner, sump pump, etc.

To provide power to 8-16 critical circuits from the main breaker panel, Hickey Plumbing, Air & Electrical can install a load center transfer switch, also known as essential circuit switch.

Service Disconnect Transfer Switch

Lynchburg ElectricianWant to power everything in your home instead of choosing individual circuits? A service disconnect transfer switch powers your entire breaker panel to provide true whole-house backup power. This type of transfer switch is installed between the electric meter and breaker panel in situations where a conventional 16-circuit load center cannot provide enough power.
